SECTION 1

· · ·
SECTION 2

· · ·
SECTION 3

· · ·
SECTION 4

· · ·
SECTION 5

· · ·
SECTION 6

· · ·
SECTION 7

· · ·
SECTION 8

· · ·
SECTION 9

The Age of Upheaval: What It Takes to Survive

When politics, economics, and AI shake the world at once, what should we prepare for?

A FinCoupling Column · 2026

The world is shaking all at once. Politics is redrawing the lines of ideology, the economy is rewriting the grammar of consumption, and technology is rewriting the definition of labor. Crises usually come one at a time. Right now, all three are moving simultaneously — and it's that simultaneity that makes this moment unlike any before it.

SECTION 1

Why Everything Is Shaking at Once, Right Now

Past crises tended to move around a single axis. The Asian financial crisis was a problem of finance; the pandemic was a problem of public health and supply chains. Back then, there was always one axis left standing. When politics grew unstable, the economy served as a buffer; when the economy collapsed, technology became a new foothold for growth.

That buffer is gone now. As political and ideological camps realign, the foundation of trust between nations is shaking, and the shockwaves immediately ripple through trade and capital flows. The economy is slowing even as the very pattern of consumption changes structurally, so the old playbook for recovery no longer works. And on top of all this, AI has entered the equation, redrawing the map of jobs and industries itself.

When everything shakes at once, there is no side left to lean on and simply wait it out. That is what fundamentally separates this moment from the crises that came before.

· · ·
SECTION 2

The Collapse on Main Street — Why Small Businesses Fall First

Waves of change always hit hardest where capital is thinnest. Small business owners are the first and hardest hit for a simple reason: they have the least cash reserve to withstand a slowdown, the least power to set their own prices, and the most direct exposure to shifts in consumer behavior.

In just the past few years, the grammar of consumption itself has changed. The habit of impulsive offline spending has rapidly shifted toward online, subscription-based, AI-curated consumption. This isn't merely a shift in channel — it's a shift in the very criteria consumers use to decide what to buy, how often, and at what price. Local commercial districts are exposed to this shift the latest, and the most unprotected.

"Going out of business is, far more often, not a failure of ability but the result of failing to keep pace with the speed of change."

One thing shouldn't be misunderstood here: the rising number of small businesses closing isn't a sign of individual incompetence — it's that the speed of structural change has outpaced what any individual operator can absorb. What's needed now isn't diligence, but the judgment to read the change first and redesign the business itself.

· · ·
SECTION 3

The Shadow Over Employment — The Wave of Unemployment Nations Now Face

Economic slowdowns always reach the labor market with a lag. Companies try to hold onto staff for a while even as revenue falls, but the moment that cushion runs out, restructuring begins. What's being observed simultaneously across many countries right now is that this lag has shrunk dramatically — the economy and employment are reacting almost in lockstep.

What's more concerning is that this employment crisis isn't purely cyclical. As industrial structures themselves are being reorganized, more and more industries are hiring far fewer people back even once the economy recovers. This raises the barrier to entry for young people while making career transitions for mid-career workers far harder than before.

Displaced labor is taking longer and longer to re-enter the market — that's what sets today's employment crisis apart from past downturns.

· · ·
SECTION 4

AI Isn't Replacement — It's Restructuring

Saying AI eliminates jobs isn't quite accurate. More precisely, AI restructures work. Repetitive, standardized tasks are rapidly moving into the domain of automation, while new forms of work that could take their place aren't emerging nearly as fast. That gap is close to the real substance of the employment anxiety we're feeling right now.

At the same time, the market is splitting in two: a small group who uses AI as a tool to multiply their productivity many times over, and a much larger group who is being replaced or pushed to the margins by it. That gap becomes an income gap, and then an asset gap. The problem is that this restructuring isn't confined to any one industry — it's happening across virtually every industry at once.

The relatively safe territory in this restructuring is clear: work that requires non-repeatable judgment, work where human trust and persuasion are central, work that weaves different kinds of knowledge into new answers. Work that follows a fixed procedure, work that processes standardized data — that's already at the center of the restructuring. Figuring out for yourself where that line sits is the most realistic preparation an individual can make right now.

So the most important question right now isn't "will AI eliminate my job" — it's whether you'll stand on the side that wields AI, or the side that gets wielded by it.

· · ·
SECTION 5

The War for Production Bases — The New Map Across Asia, the Middle East, the Americas, and Europe

The higher tensions between nations rise, the more each country tries to reduce its dependence on any single other country's supply chain. The result is the production-base race now playing out simultaneously across Asia, the Middle East, the Americas, and Europe. Where factories once flocked to wherever labor was cheapest, capital now moves toward places that are politically trustworthy and closely aligned with domestic policy.

Asia is still trying to defend its manufacturing-based competitiveness; the Middle East is rushing to diversify its industrial base on the back of oil money; the Americas are trying to bring supply chains back closer to home through reshoring and nearshoring. Europe is strengthening industrial policy to secure energy and technology security at the same time. Each region's calculus differs, but the direction is the same: taking back control of the supply chain into their own hands.

This isn't merely a concern for large corporations. Which region ends up hosting production bases affects that region's employment, prices, currency value, and ultimately, the direction of that region's financial markets.

· · ·
SECTION 6

What History Tells Us — Lessons from Past Turning Points

Humanity isn't facing a moment like this for the first time. The Industrial Revolution completely dismantled a craft-based economy; the postwar reorganization redrew the world order and the monetary system from scratch. More recently, there was the 1997 Asian financial crisis, and the 2008 financial crisis.

One fact keeps repeating across all of these turning points: those who acknowledged the crisis early and restructured themselves came out of it with a stronger market position, while those who waited around expecting things to "go back to normal soon" fell further behind even during the recovery.

What's different about the current transformation is its speed. The Industrial Revolution unfolded over the course of a generation; the political, economic, and AI restructuring happening now is compressed into a matter of years. That means the window for making the right call has narrowed just as dramatically.

· · ·
SECTION 7

So What Should We Actually Do — A Survival Strategy by Scale

Reading macro change is one thing; knowing what to actually do within it is another. The right response has to change depending on scale.

🏪 Small Businesses — Compete on Density, Not Scale

If you can't compete on scale, differentiate through a dense understanding of your local area and your customers. Redesign your business to combine online channels with offline experience, and build multiple modest revenue streams rather than depending on just one. The most important thing right now isn't expansion — it's defending your cash flow. Aggressive expansion funded by debt is the single riskiest choice in this environment.

🏢 Mid-Size Companies — Don't Weather This Alone, Connect

Mid-size companies don't have the capital cushion of large corporations, but they have more capacity to respond to change than small businesses do. That capacity should go toward increasing supply chain flexibility. Lower your dependence on any single country or trading partner, and selectively adopt AI and automation to secure productivity. Above all, don't try to solve everything alone — you need an approach that shares risk and opportunity through strategic partnerships.

🏛️ Large Corporations — Design for Geopolitical Risk on a Long Horizon

Large corporations need to view the current changes not as a short-term earnings issue but as a geopolitical realignment playing out over 5 to 10 years. Move quickly on capital allocation tied to relocating production bases, and prepare large-scale retraining and transition programs matched to the workforce restructuring AI is driving. The gap between companies that read this shift early and move preemptively, and those that follow late, will redraw the industrial map of the next decade entirely.

👤 Individuals — Invest First in What Can't Be Replaced

Regardless of the size of the organization you belong to, this is also a moment that calls for redesigning things at the individual level. The territory AI is rapidly encroaching on is standardized, repetitive work; by contrast, capabilities like judgment, persuasion, relationships, and creative synthesis remain relatively resistant to replacement for longer. Moving away from depending on a single organization or a single role for your income, and reshaping your career so your expertise can be demonstrated through multiple channels, is the most realistic way to get through this period.

· · ·
SECTION 8

How to Read the Financial Markets — Finding Opportunity Amid Volatility

When politics, the economy, and technology shake at once, financial markets are governed by volatility more than direction. The most dangerous posture in this environment is going all-in on a single conviction. Excessive concentration in any one country, industry, or asset is the first thing to take a hit amid uncertainty like this.

The wiser posture, instead, is to diversify across regions and asset classes, and to keep a long-term foothold in structurally ongoing shifts like the production-base realignment or the AI-driven industrial restructuring. Rather than reacting to every short-term headline, consistently tracking which assets and industries stand to benefit from the three big shifts unfolding in the world right now — political realignment, structural change in consumption, and AI-driven industrial restructuring — is what becomes real competitive advantage.

More concretely: the currencies and assets of countries that succeed in attracting production bases are likely to structurally strengthen; dividend-paying assets with stable cash flow tend to hold up relatively well during a consumption-pattern transition; and the industries underpinning the infrastructure of the AI restructuring — semiconductors, data centers, power — are likely positioned for structural benefit for as long as this restructuring continues. That said, this is only a reading of a general trend, not a buy or sell signal on any specific stock or asset.

In the end, the people who survive a highly volatile market aren't the ones who predict well — they're the ones who read the direction of change first and adjust their position with flexibility.

· · ·
SECTION 9

A Compass for an Age That Won't Stop Shaking

With politics, the economy, and technology all shaking at once, there's no perfect answer. What is clear is that we have to let go of the one assumption that whatever worked until now will keep working going forward.

Whether you're a small business, a mid-size company, a large corporation, or an individual, the ones who survive aren't the ones who deny the change — they're the ones who read it first and redesign themselves accordingly. And that redesign happens faster, and more accurately, together than alone.

SECTION 1

SECTION 2

SECTION 3

SECTION 4

SECTION 5

SECTION 8
